Samsung Galaxy Tab
Samsung introduced the finest Android tablet to the market on Wednesday. I like a lot about it, but I won’t get it.
Though I would use a tablet device every single day.
So Samsung’s tablet is of the 7-inch variety and uses the manufacturer’s TouchWiz technology. It looks good — basically like a little kid’s iOS, but still good. The videos show that it runs smooth. However, the Android platform is not yet ready for tablets. This has been admitted by Google before and Samsung today. Tablets will mainly be focused on future releases of the OS in its 3.0/3.5 form. That being said, this is as good as it will get until then.
A somewhat limited access to the Android Market isn’t cool. But, as the developer community has already pointed out, the device will eventually be fully customizable with all types of fun ROMs. That’s when things will get interesting.
I love the Androidness. I love the specs. I love the commercial. I love the idea. I love the size.
But two big factors outweigh a lot of the love. 1) The price point. The cheapest version is pushing $900. Um, no thank you. 2) Only 3G will exist. Sure, those prices will come down through a contract with Verizon, but I don’t want another monthly payment and two-year contract. I don’t want to make phone calls on my tablet. I want a WiFi only device for $350.
Whoever makes a tablet that is WiFi only and in the 7 or 8-inch size form first will get my business. Whether that’s Apple or someone touting Android remains to be seen. I’d prefer Android (in actual tablet OS), but I’ll take the first to the market, which, according to rumors, could very well be Apple.
