What I’m using, ep 1 — BlackBerry App World

Almost two months ago, I listed 28 BlackBerry apps that I use on my Blackberry 9550 (Storm 2). A lot has changed since then with some new apps, updated apps and apps that I removed. Anyways, I’m now starting to do the separate reviews, beginning with BlackBerry App World.
Seems simple enough to begin with BlackBerry App World when discussing actual apps on your device. Unlike Apple’s iPhone, you can download/install a number of applications to your device outside of the designated “app store”, but BlackBerry’s effort does a fine job of presenting with you just about all of the most popular applications. Purchasing is done through the app and made easy with a PayPal account.
There’s really not a whole lot to say about the BlackBerry App World. If you’re someone that uses apps and doesn’t follow CrackBerry, Rimarkable or some other BlackBerry blog, it’s a great resource to find applications and see what people are using. Everything is right there for you — top downloads, reviews, screenshots and categories that provide easier navigation.
The cons: Navigation can be tricky at times. For one, more specific categories would help (an example would be to break down the social networking folder into twitter, facebook, etc subcategories). The app is slow at times, which can be very frustrating. A more recent feature added themes to the app world, but they are lumped together with all the other applications. Themes are not applications, they are themes, so separation of those two would be helpful.
Still, though, the BlackBerry App World is a relatively new product from RIM, so give it time. Updates do occur pretty frequently and I’m sure they’ll fine tune a lot of the minor issues. That said, it’s very useful and great to have around.
